“A Political Deficit”

The fiscal situation is not the only deficit infecting this country.

Congress’s approval rating is a shocking ten percent. It’s lowest approval rating since they began keeping track in 1974 and, given the current political climate, there doesn’t appear to be any chance for improvement in the near future.

The reason for this low approval can be traced to the very sources of the problem and in order to fix it we must first expose what and who caused it to fall below the approval of Communism and Used Car Salesmen.

On issue after issue, as Yogi Berra so aptly put it, “It’s déja vu all over again.”

Is this low approval rating deserved?

The public seems to think so and is growing tired of the gridlock and rhetoric.

They’re tired of being held hostage. Tired of hearing the same arguments, same talking points, of the same inflexible positions, and the same intransigence. No wonder the outcome is the same.

Is this a sign of insanity?

By definition it is! Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome is sheer madness.

Though both parties are painted by the media as holding immovable positions on a multitude of issues — false equivalency — there is huge difference between the two.

One party is clearly ‘for the people,’ and the other is inextricably tied to corporations. Which is which is obvious.

Democrats generally support issues that will benefit, protect, and improve lives, and follow democratic ideals.

Republicans, on the other hand, support issues that benefit corporations and strenghten the military-industrial complex — the one President Dwight D. Eisenhower warned us about in 1960. They value corporations more than they do individuals.

Politically they support war — as long as other people’s children are fighting their bloody battles. They consider this hawkish use of power a display of superiority.

Drawn to dirty money like a magnet they love deregulation and lower taxes even though both have done extreme damage to the country, our financial well-being, and more than doubled the national debt.

Their policies pollute the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink. They contaminate the lives of the poor while enhancing the lives of the rich.

They are also deficient in values; the area in which they claim strength.

Claiming to be the party of family values they easily stray from virtuous principles whenever it suits them — so quick to lie or deny their obvious hypocrisy. What intrinsic value is there in teaching your children that it’s acceptable to lie and cheat?

What family value exists that teaches your children and grandchildren that success is attained by the oppression of other families — by demeaning 47% of our country’s population?

There is truly a deficit in right-wing politicians who consistently vote against veterans, seniors, gays, students, women, and immigrants. Who think nothing of trampling the God given rights of black and hispanic communities. They do everything in their power to keep the poor dependent and poor.

They suppress the vote, lie to the public, line their pockets, and go against constituent’s best interests.

Even worse, Republican Senator’s abuse and misuse the filibuster — blocking nearly every piece of legislation that is brought to the Senate floor.

Their positions on gun control, influenced by the National Rifle Association and gun lobby, are killing innocent children.

The list of deficiencies go on and on — a never ending list of UnAmerican positions, actions, and inactions — many of them motivated by their hatred for our first black president.

This political deficit of a tunnel visioned right-wing has weakened our country and continues to limit our ability to move forward and correct the things needed to fix this nation; to again provide the opportunities our founder’s foresaw.

Despite Fox’s repeated attempts to demean Democrats and bolster Republicans, ‘the people’ are realizing who bears the greatest responsibility for our failures.

As long as voters in Kentucky, South Carolina, Texas, Iowa, Alabama, Tennessee, Arizona, and other crimson states elect the same deficient people — Mitch McConnell, John McCain, Steve King, Ted Cruz, Jeff Sessions, Lindsey Graham, Marsha Blackburn, Jim DeMint, Louie Gohmert, Rand Paul, and Trent Franks — our country will continue this slow and excruciating decline.

And with it Congress’s approval rating will dip into single digits and decline to new all-time lows!
